Getting a Card
Temporary Library Cards
To enable Milton residents 13 and older without a library card to access resources during the COVID-19 pandemic, Milton Public Library is providing a temporary library card. Here’s how it works:
- Call the library at 802-893-4644 during business hours to request the special card.
- Staff will ask your name, Milton address, telephone number, and email address (if you have one).
- The temporary library card is good for Milton Public Library online resources and curbside pickup only. We will give you your card number over the telephone.
- Your library card number is your user name, and your last name all lower case is your password for Milton Public Library online and physical resources, which you can search for and place holds on from our website at https://miltonlibrary.wpengine.com/
- Your temporary card expires one month after the library building reopens to the public.
- To make your temporary card a permanent card, come to the library once the building reopens with a photo ID with a Milton address; or a photo ID and something with your Milton address (lease, bill, etc.). Those age 15 and under must come in with their parent or guardian, who then must become guarantor of the card. Apply for a Library Card at Milton Public Library
All Milton, Vermont, residents are eligible to apply for a free library card. A resident is a person who pays taxes in the Town of Milton, whether they live in Milton full-time or part-time.
Persons age 16 and older will need to provide a photo ID and proof of a current Milton address. If your photo ID does not include your current address, you may use a utility bill, tax bill, lease, etc. You may list a P.O. Box as a mailing address, but you must list a secondary physical address to obtain a library card.
Those under age 16 may obtain a library card with their parent or guardian present. The parent/guardian must provide the same identification as described above, and the child’s card will be linked to the parent/guardian’s card. As the guarantor, the adult is responsible for late, damaged, or missing materials on the child’s card.
Home Card Patrons
Milton Public Library is a member of the Homecard Library System, a cooperative lending program of 23 libraries in northwestern Vermont. Milton Home Card library cards are given to patrons age 18 and older. These cards have an M64 sticker on the back. A list of the Home Card libraries is at the end of this document.
Patrons who have a library card from one of the participating Homecard libraries may checkout items from Milton Public Library. Interlibrary loans (ILLs), family recreation passes, and some new books are not available to patrons with Home Cards when visiting other libraries.
Please bring your library card with you to the lending library. You are responsible for returning the items to the location from which you borrowed them.
The libraries in Alburgh, Burlington (Fletcher Free), Isle La Motte, North Hero, and St. Albans are NOT Homecard participating libraries. Residents of these locales may only checkout items from Milton Public Library by purchasing a nonresident card.
Adults who are not Milton residents (taxpayers) and do not have a home card from a particpating library may apply for a nonresident card. The same procedures apply. There is a $20 annual fee. You must provide a photo ID with a current address. Nonresident cards are not eligible for Home Card status.
Milton residents who are teachers may apply for a teacher card. This card allows for one checkout period of six weeks. Renewals are only possible by special request of and permission from the director or assistant director.
There is a $1 replacement fee for lost cards.
Milton Public Library does not charge overdue fees. However, once an item is more than four weeks overdue, the patron will received a bill for the cost of replacing that item(s). Cardholders are also responsible for paying for damaged or lost materials.
The patron’s library card and all cards connected to it (guarantors or guarantees) will be suspended until the materials are returned or the bill is paid in full.
Teacher card status will be revoked if a bill must be sent for overdue items.
Bills more than 90 days old may be sent to a collection agency. In addition, the patron’s library card and any guarantee/guarantor cards will be blocked from use, and the patron will lose Home Card privileges, and be put on the Home Card stop list, sent to all home card participating libraries.
If all items are returned or paid for, the patron may ask the library director to reinstate Home Card or teacher card privileges. That decision is at the director’s discretion.
